The magic carpets designed to keep you awake and gambling

Chris Maluszynski, 35,has spent four years snapping the kaleidoscopic designs after noticing the garish carpets that line the hotels and casinos at Las Vegas have an important part to play. Some clues:

-The outrageous carpets do nothing to distract gamblers.

-A floral carpet is a garish designs intended to keep casino regulars awake.

-Greens and reds are used to make dropped chips harder to find.

-Wheel designs are used to remind punters of the ever turning wheel of fortune.

Rellenando agujeros

Abandonaded city

In the desert 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles is a suburb abandoned in advance of itself—the unfinished extension of a place called California City. Visible from above now are a series of badly paved streets carved into the dust and gravel. The uninhabited street plan has become an abstract geoglyph—unintentional land art visible from airplanes—not a thriving community at all

Winter Olympic Games without snow

Today is opening day of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. But the warm weather and rain of late at one of the venues has forced the organizers to haul in snow via truck and helicopter (because the Winter Olympics don’t really work without snow). Since trucks and helicopters emit a lot of carbon, critics and protesters are calling out the Vancouver Olympics for their somewhat hypocritical measures to save the 17 day event from total meltdown.

AC/DC gig at Falluja

"I looked back over my shoulder to where we had come from, into the vacant field at Falluja's northern edge. A group of marines were standing at the foot of a gigantic loudspeaker, the kind used at rock concerts. It was AC/DC, the Australian heavy metal band, pouring out its unbridled sounds. I recognized the song immediately: "Hells Bells," the band's celebration of satanic power, had come to us on the battlefield"

Huge model

the terrain of a region in china known as china's 'area 51' was discovered in 2006 thanks to satellite images of google earth. this area appears to be an exact replica in scale 1/500, of the 157 500 km2 of the chinese province aksai chin, which borders on india and pakistan. the area is important for chinese because it connects tibet with a road that the
chinese built in 1962. experts say that this model could've been built for military purposes.
